The Secret History of Southern Jews and Baseball Video

July 24, 2025

Since the late 1800s, American Jews have had a love affair with baseball - as players, fans, sportswriters, owners, and executives. Professor Peter Dreier, author of the book “Baseball Rebels”, joined us to discuss and celebrate the key Southern Jewish figures who have influenced baseball, from the Little Leagues to the Major Leagues. Get ready for some curveballs: exploring surprising, little-known, and even controversial moments from baseball’s storied past, the program will cover both sports figures you know and some whose names you may never have heard. This piece of virtual Jewish-American history was presented on Thursday, July 24 at 12pm Central.  Sit a Spell: Virtual Southern Summer Series is a free, three-part, online lecture series exploring the lives and impacts of three lesser-known Southern Jewish figures who played a part in 20th century history.
